Sustainable Green Innovation

WPT BIOBASED has developed an innovative plant pot based on unprinted used paper. A natural raw material that is more than sufficiently available on the market. The pot made from this paper is coated with a coating made from organic residual  materials from plant products. The entire product is compostable and ultimately nothing remains when the coating has reverted to its original monomers. The composting process has been tested at various waste processing companies. Independently of each other, both tests gave positive results.

The coating makes the pot waterproof and plants can be grown in it. After the cultivation period, the plant has the same qualities as when grown in a plastic pot and the natural appearance and presentation of the pot is very good. The composting process of the pot already starts when cultivation is started and the first water and heat are added. Water, humidity, light and heat are the triggers that start the composting process. Depending on the cultivation conditions, the composting process will take shorter or longer. Current experiences are very positive with cultivation times of around 4 months. In anticipation of larger deliveries, WPT is in favor of testing the conditions at nursery and product level first for crops where this is necessary. The pot can be processed mechanically with the same machines as the plastic variant. The required adjustment of the settings is no different than when changing the pot size.

Based on the Life Cycle Analysis (the footprint of the pot) calculated by GREENHOUSE SUSTAINABILITY, it has become clear that the pot made of paper and coated with the unique WPT coating saves 52% CO2 compared to the plastic variant made of recycled plastic.
